Want to Stop Your Cat From Peeing on the Bed? Toilet Training May Be the Solution

If your cat is peeing on the bed, you can bet that he is trying to communicate a problem to you.

cataclysm

As irritating as this behavior may be, for some cat owners, it is a blessing in disguise. Instead of re-training your cat to use the litter box, consider training your cat to use the toilet bowel instead.

CAT

My name is Elise Grayson and I am an avid fan of cats. I've owned cats for over 10 years and have become accustomed to their behavior, but, it wasn't always easy. I acquired my the foundation of my knowledge about cat behavior from a trusted friend and animal behaviorist, Kaylee Brennan.

First, you should take your cat to the vet in order to rule out any physical causes for inappropriate cat peeing. It is also important that you understand the reasons why your cat is peeing in the house (I'll provide a resource at the end of the article). Once you receive the green light from the vet and you understand the reasons behind your cat's behavior, it's time to start toilet training your cat.

The good news is that indoor cats of all ages can be successfully trained to use the toilet.

There are many perks to toilet training your cat. I've listed a few of these benefits below.

1) No more dreaded cleaning - Scooping smelly cat litter is not a job that anyone enjoys. Once your cat is toilet trained, all you have to do is flush the waste away!

2) Save money on litter - Even if you can afford the self-
cleaning litter machines, you still need a constant supply of litter, which adds up quickly and can become quite expensive. Toilet training will eliminate the need for litter in the long run.

3) Stay bug free - Toilets reduce your risk of coming in contact with infectious diseases and parasites such as toxoplasmosis, ringworm, or tapeworm from cat feces. This is especially important for expectant mothers, as toxoplasmosis can cause birth defects that range from eye infections, an enlarged liver and spleen, jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), pneumonia. mental retardation, severely impaired eyesight, cerebral palsy, seizures and death.

4) Less candles and air freshener sprays - No more air neutralizers or candles to cover up the litter smell in your house. The money that you save from buying less candles can be put towards eating out more often or buying a nice bottle of wine.

Cat behaviors to keep in mind while toilet training your cat:

Cats, on instinct, bury their waste to hide it from predators; litter encourages this behavior. Putting a small scratching post next to your toilet will solve your cat's urge to scratch after they've gone to the bathroom.

Generally speaking, cats, can be slaves to routine and are especially resistant to rapid change. This is why it is important to slowly and gradually introduce these changes into your cats daily life.

As I mentioned above, it is very important to first understand the reasons behind your cat peeing outside the litter box. Understanding these reasons will help you to rule out other issues that can cause cat urination. You don't want to go through the process of toilet training only to find out that your cat is peeing in your bed because of another underlying issue.

Cat Training and The Litter Box - Potty Training Issue

When you first bring home kitty you need to have a litter box in place where you are happy with it. This is because it is the very first thing you do when kitty comes in the house on day one or you are asking for trouble already. Set it away someplace but make sure kitty sees it right away and sniffs it.

For cat potty training there are all kinds of litter boxes on the market and you can splurge or go low tech or price it is your call. They have automatic boxes but it may make small kitty feel uncomfy and unwelcome. They have covered boxes but kitty may be too small to get into it on the step up. Covered boxes will retain smell better than uncovered. You can always start with cheap open and move to the automated later. Warning, the automated box may scare kitty from using it again if it goes into work during a bathroom break, so make sure you control the movement. Kitty may abandon the box if scared and move to another part of your house.

CAT BREEDERS

When it comes to choosing litter do not spend much time. cares less and there are so many on the market.

You just pick the best choice for you be it fresh smelly, auto clumping or whatever.

However, you may want to stay with the same litter the breeder used or shelter at first to make the cat feel more at ease, then you can switch after a while to whatever you like. Scoopy, clumpy, cedar, crystal they are all good. Some are for multiple cats to reduce odor.

Litter mats are what you put underneath the litter box so when we train the cat we don't have litter scattered everyplace. See the Cat will scratch at the litter and then cover it up and may spray the litter all over your floor. This is just natural instincts of the cat and is no problem. He may also have some stuck in his claws as he tracks it away. Therefore, put a mat or something under the box for you ease of mind and clean house.

Cat Training - How to Stop Your Cat's Bad Behavior

Is your cat's bad behavior driving you up the wall? Many people are under the impression that cats are too independent to be trained. This is not true. Any animal can be trained. You just need to condition its reactions in a consistent and predictable manner. Animal behaviorists call this Pavlovian Conditioning. Although the most famous of the experiments revolved around dogs, subsequent scientists have successfully shown this effect even in human children. In other words, this effect is the basis of all successful animal training methods, from dogs to rats to lions.

catching fire

Now, conditioning and punishment do not mean the same thing. You do not need to hurt your cat when it misbehaves, you just need to clearly demonstrate that its behavior is unacceptable. So, how do you do that? All you need are a number of spray water bottles filled with cold water, placed in convenient locations around your house. Anytime you see your cat doing something wrong, you immediately spray its body with cold water. This method gets your cats attention and annoys it but does not hurt it. You are not punishing your cat. You are interrupting it in the middle of its misbehavior. Do this consistently and immediately and you will eventually break your cat of its bad habits. An obvious limitation of this method is that if you are not around when kitty misbehaves, it will not work.

CAT

Here is a method of deterrence which works even when you are not at home. If your cat eats or scratches your houseplants, you can try putting mothballs in them. Cats are sensitive to the strong smell, and this will keep your cat away from your plants. You can also use the same trick to keep your cat from urinating and defecating in inappropriate locations.

Another problem which you may face as a cat owner is having your cat scratch your furniture or carpet. First, you need to know that your cat is only doing what comes naturally and you should not stop it from scratching. The scratching is meant to maintain its claws in good condition and also to stretch and tone its muscles. If you punish it for scratching, you will confuse it and this will lead to further bad behavior. What you want to do is minimize the damage it can do. Just trim its claws. If you do not know how, get a veterinarian to trim them for you. Ask your vet to teach you. You also want to redirect your cat's attention from your carpet or furniture to another target. If your cat likes to scratch vertical surfaces, then get it a vertical scratching post. Ditto for horizontal surfaces.

Try these tips for stopping your cat's bad behavior. You do not have to be cruel and punish kitty. Just take some suitable preventative measures to interrupt or prevent its bad behavior. Be consistent, be firm and patient in keeping the bad behavior from turning into bad habits.

Training Your Cat to Use a Cat Flap

If you do allow your cat to go outside, you know how frustrating it can be when your cat wants to go in and out and in and out throughout the day. To avoid having to get up all the time to open the door, you may just want to invest in a cat flap.

It is a good idea to buy a cat flap that allows you to lock it when you want your cat to remain inside. If you also have a problem with your cat bringing friends over, or even if unwanted guests like raccoons or opossums like to enjoy the inside of your house, you may even want to get a cat flap that is connected to a remote controlled collar.

SAVANNAH CAT BREEDERS

Still, if you get a cat flap, you will need to teach your cat how to use it. For the most part, cats will not automatically learn how to use a cat flap, and often your cat will be fearful of it at first. To train your cat to use the cat flap, you may want to enlist the help of a friend or another member of the family. You will also need a treat that your cat just cannot resist.

1. Your friend needs to sit on one side of the door with the treat, while you sit on the other side with your cat.

2. Your partner should be visible through the cat flap, and he or she should be a person your cat trusts.

3. Have your partner call your cat's name through the flap and show him or her the treat.

4. Your cat will probably edge forward to check out the treat, and he or she may even nudge flap. Often this will be enough to get your cat to go through the flap, but many cats will not go all the way through.

5. If your cat is still nervous, you may need to open the flap a little to show off the treat. You may have to start off by holding the flap wide open and letting your cat walk through it a few time, letting the door down a little more each time.

6. Make sure you offer your cat the treat and a ton of praise when he or she passes through the door successfully.

7. After your cat has gone back and forth a number of times, your cat will learn that the cat flap is nothing to be afraid of.

Litter Box Training For Persian Cats

Litter box issues can be a deal breaker for many pet owners, and being allergic to cat urine boy I can sure identify with that. Persian cats and Persian kittens can be particularly fussy about a litter box, and there are more than a few tricks to keeping them on target so to speak. We have listed them here in the hope that you and your furry friend can find a solution to any problems you may be having in this department.

Persian cats have a horrible reputation for being terrible about a litter box, and I think I know why. Persians, for whatever reason, are super touchy about how clean the litter box is. I am not sure the reason, but if you are having problems with a cat, try keeping the litter box extremely clean, scoop twice a day if you must. If this isn't your problem, look into the litter type you are using. I like the clay type clumping litter, but only because that is the only litter my Persian cat will use. They don't like newspaper, seem to really hate the wood pellet kind, and will often refuse to go anywhere near any kind of perfumed litter. Persian cats also seem to be particularly odorous animals, and even Persian kittens give off a rough scent in the kitty bathroom. I find that sprinkling a little baking soda in the bottom of the box before I put in fresh litter seems to help quite a bit, I like it and I know the cat likes it better. Another consideration, if you are lucky enough to have a cat not picky about litter type, is how that is going to get into that long Persian fur. I sure wish mine would use pellet litter and I think had she been put on it as a kitten she may have accepted it later on in life, but won now, and the clay really gets everywhere with that long hair.

Teaching young cats to litter train can be a real pain in the neck and no one envies a friend going through it with their Persian cat. But keep these things in mind and you will be on track to getting through to your pet what your desire is. Deep down they aren't trying to irritate you, and really just want what makes you happy. Sooner or later they will figure out what you wanted and will be spot on.

How the Experts Use Daily Playtime in Their Cat Training Session

All cats and kittens need daily playtime. Cats who do not get enough play or interaction with their owners can become bored, restless and develop behavior problems. A bored cat will find ways of amusing himself, such as eating your plants.

Set aside 10 to 15 minutes every day to play with your feline friend. Your cat will look forward to your scheduled playtime and will miss it if you skip a day. Play not only makes your pet socialized, but it is a great way to give him the exercise he needs while keeping his mind and instincts sharp.

CAT BREEDERS

Kittens need little or no encouragement to play and often play so hard that they wear themselves out. If you have more than one kitten in the house, you will not have to worry about scheduling playtime because kittens will play each other constantly throughout the day.

Make sure that your cat has plenty of safe toys out when you are not home so that he can amuse himself during the day. Every so often, buy a new toy and introduce it to your cat, and then rotate out an old toy. He will find the new toy interesting, and in a few days you can bring back the old toy. Your cat will think the old toy is new again.

Cats love to play games, and you can throw a ping pong ball down the hallway and have your cat chase it or swat a plastic call for your cat to hit back to you. They also love cardboard boxed and may use them as toys, a scratching post, and as a bed. Your cat may also invent his own games of chase or tag with you or other pets.

A happy, well socialized cat is a dream to have in the home. Cat lovers know that their cat is not a statue meant to be ignored and realize that the more they socialize with their pet, the more interest he will take in his owner's activities.

Cats are intelligent animals who need stimulation and interaction in their world. Spend some quality time socializing with your feline companion, and see what he is trying to tell you and you may be surprised by what you learn.
