Things to Do in Wilmington North Carolina

If you're looking for a great family vacation on the East Coast and you want to enjoy the sun and sand but still be able to be adventurous then Wilmington North Carolina is a great solution. There is so much to do in the Wilmington area, the problem is having enough time. A lot of families are looking for a great beach getaway but they want something more then just laying on the beach. I know myself I want to be able to relax and enjoy the sun and sand but I don't want to spend my entire day there. Downtown Wilmington is a historic area that not only offers beauty in its' scenery but the adventures that you can have in just this area are amazing.

One of my favorite activities to do is, to go on the famous ghost walking tour. Wilmington is known for being one of the most haunted cities in the US. The guided tour is about 1 ½ hour long and the guide tells stories of the city. During the tour you can feel the eeriness of the stories. Another great thing is taking the guided horse and carriage ride through downtown Wilmington. The guide is very knowledgeable of the city and its' history, this is a very inexpensive tour that takes you back in time. You can also take a boat ride and get an up close view of the US Battleship of NC. If naval history is your thing then you should definitely take time and visit the US Battleship of NC, this is a tour that you need a couple of hours for.You can see the marina and other boats that are docking along with wildlife and just maybe a few alligators that are hanging around. Being a college area there are plenty of bars and restaurants that you can explore. If you're interested in antiques or black magic you are in the right area. The downtown area offers a little something for everyone when it comes to shopping.

Outside the downtown area you can head to the surrounding beach communities which include Kure, Carolina and Wrightsville Beaches. All three beaches are small but uncrowded areas that you can soak up the sun or take a stroll on the boardwalk. Fort Fisher is on the far southern end which offers a state park if you would like to go hiking. The aquarium is one of my favorite places to go. The aquarium is a great place for kids of all ages and it's a great educational place to stop at. Another great place to stop at is Arlie Gardens which offers a butterfly conservatory and a handmade glass exhibit done by a local artist. Wilmington is truly a place where you can have your cake and eat it too. You can enjoy the sun and sand and relax on the beaches and still enjoy the boardwalk but not the crowds. Or if you're interested in fishing or hiking or visiting battlegrounds you can do it all in one vacation.

20 Things I've Learned From My Cat

We've had the good fortune of sharing our home with our cat, Puddin', for nearly 16 years now. This means she is going on 80 in human years. She was a young stray when we found her or rather, when she found us. She was hanging around the place I used to work and since she was so persistent with her little meow, I simply had to pet her. She certainly was a lovable cat. It was dark outside so I didn't really get a good look at her.

After I came home from work, I told my husband about the cat and suggested we drive by there since we were going out. He said, "That cat isn't gonna be there, that was 2 hours ago! Besides, what would we do with it?" Well I wanted to go back anyway, just in case. I really had no plans of taking her home, at least consciously. I mainly just wanted him to see her.

When we arrived back at the office, I got out of the car and called her. I said something goofy like, "Where's Mom's baby?" She instantly came running out from under a bush across the street. My husband said, "Well I'll be damned!" I took this as some kind of sign and my husband just fell in love with her immediately. He said we needed to take her home and feed her because he could feel her ribs. "Yeah but we don't even have a litter box or cat food or anything and I'm not sure I want an indoor cat. What if she has fleas?" I had a million excuses but we decided we'd just feed her and keep her as an outdoor cat. Yeah right! That idea lasted for all of about two seconds.

We took her home and since we didn't have any cat food we gave her tuna and milk. We let her come in and we put the food on a plate in the foyer. She lapped everything up in record time. Now that I could see her in the light, I thought she was the most beautiful cat I'd ever seen. It was those huge eyes; so big and beautiful. She reminded me of an owl.

After her feast, we opened the door for her to leave but she didn't want to go back outside. NO WAY! As far as she was concerned, she had hit the mother lode, the jackpot, the lottery! The funny thing is she's never been out since! She loves being an indoor cat and loves living the life of Riley.

We originally named her Savannah but then started calling her Puddin' because my Dad had affectionately called her that once. It was a name she responded to quite well and it seemed to be a better fit. So we kept calling her Puddin' and it just stuck. She unfortunately has a slow metabolism, and is now a big fat butterball, weighing in at nearly 22 pounds. While she no longer does back flips and now needs to be carried up the stairs, she continues to bring us much joy.

If you are lucky enough to share your home with a cat, then you know the wonder of the fabulous feline. If you are one of those people who doesn't like cats, I'm sorry to hear that. I don't understand how anybody can dislike any animal; it makes no sense to me.

Animals behave as designed by nature. They are usually not mean spirited unless they are mistreated. Obviously, I wouldn't have a pet shark because their behavior isn't really all that compatible with humans.

Just because cats don't jump all over you, slobber on you, and lick you to death doesn't mean they don't love you. They simply have a different way of showing it. Whenever I hear someone say they hate cats it reminds me of not liking someone because of their skin color. I guess prejudice isn't limited to human beings.
There's an Irish proverb that says, "Beware of anyone who dislikes cats". My feeling is that people who don't like cats simply don't understand them or don't take the time to.

I'd like to share a few things I've learned from my cat. If you're a cat lover then you can relate, if you're not, then I hope perhaps I've made you more open minded to enjoying these magnificent creatures.
Things I've learned from my cat:

1. Sleep does the body good
2. Comfort is highly underrated
3. Baroque music is soothing to the soul and silence is golden
4. Getting your back scratched is one of life's great pleasures

10. Your crap should be covered at all times
11. It's essential to be fastidious with your grooming habits
12. Even if you're smarter than everyone else, there's no need to let it show
13. Don't worry about what others think of you
14. It's best to live life on your own terms
15. When you go out on a limb, be sure to land on your feet
16. A persistent little nudge can pay off big time
17. Attitude is everything. Even if you're just a kitten, see yourself as a lion
18. Independence is wonderful and so is companionship
19. If you have that wide-eyed, innocent look, it's easy to get anything you ask for
20. Purring is an excellent way to show appreciation

Shortly after this article was written, Puddin' passed away, but her memory will live in our hearts forever.

Twelve Things Buyers Should Know About Leopard Gecko Pet Care

Leopard Geckos are categorized as Lizards. Lizards are cold-blooded reptiles and belong to the Squamata order. Leopard geckos are four-legged, have visible ear openings and of course movable eyelids.

Size can be from a few centimeters to as long as three meters and more.

SAVANNAH CAT BREEDERS

Leopard geckos are considered to be very inexpensive pets and perfect as a pet for people who love animals but can not afford an expensive dog or cat.

Keeping a leopard gecko however can quickly get overboard and out of control if not managed the right way.

Depending on the type of equipments, the whole situation can become more expensive than keeping a dog. Keep in mind that the budget can be reduced to a minimum and this is the reason why leopard geckos make such a good pet for people who adore pets but can not really afford to keep an expensive pet. Keeping a leopard gecko is a hobby that can be self researched and does not depend on purchases from the pet store.

The most important thing before getting into the buying phase is to make sure to anticipate one's goals with the pet. It is important to think about the size of the gecko.

Remember the full-grown size of a lizard and this leopard gecko can grow up to six feet long. Do you want a pet of such a size? You have to think about this first before actually buying the pet.

Secondly you have to understand some basic things about the leopard gecko before you make your buying decision. Just know that leopard geckos need extra care and lots of space in order to stay healthy.

Uninformed pet owners should certainly choose a pet that is easier to handle than a leopard gecko. Stay away from the geckos which grow very big if you can not accommodate this kind of sized pet gecko.

My favorite is the leopard gecko which are the smaller sized alternative of its larger brother. A leopard gecko also require less maintenance and care in general.

A leopard gecko does not demand special conditions and attention such as big terrariums with special UV lightning.

Following the leopard gecko closely are bearded dragons. Bearded dragons are easy to keep and maintain but then again they do require a big terrarium with special UV lightning.

So this kind of situation is not great for someone who is on a small budget! In this case stay with a leopard gecko instead.

The investment for a bearded dragon is quite large as well.

Another good option for a small budget are angles and like bearded dragons angles are pretty easy to manage and maintain. On the other hand they need a big terrarium like the bearded dragons. They also require special UV lightning.

Next, let's talk about blue-tongued skins, green angles, fat tailed geckos, Madagascar grounds, Tokay geckos and day geckos.

Know that the bigger the lizard is the harder it becomes to keep them as pets. These types of animals really require large environments. Handling issues and many other factors can be involved with these kinds of animals.

Iguanas are still another option and they are very good pets, but they need a big space along with lots of care and patience. They get sick quite easily.

Other animals that challenge you as a pet owner are chameleons, Savannah monitors, iguanas, white tegu, geckos, and Argentinean blacks.

For most of them, lighting and temperature are very important factor. The temperature of their environment should be an exact match to their natural habitat.

Notice that lizards are cold-blooded and that they require warmth for healthy growth.

In the nature, these reptiles move to habitats where they can find their favorite temperature. They keep out of the sun and live in protected shade. This is the reason why a temperature gradient is a must for these animals. They must have an appropriate temperature in order to stay healthy.

Lizards consume all kinds of different fruits, leaves, insects, and smaller mammals. It is important to learn about what to feed your pet before getting into the actual phase of keeping one.

It is highly recommended that potential buyers should observe the lizard before buying it. Halos be aware that these animals get stressed out with all the traveling. Especially changing environments is not good for them.

You can learn more about the signs that give an indicator of whether the pet is in a healthy condition or not.

Things you can check to make sure the animal is in good condition.

1. Check if the body is fleshy and not flaky.

2 Their skin should be very shinny and without wrinkles or scratches.

3. The animals should be very healthy and not bony at all.

4. If the tail and hipbones are visible, this is a sign that they are probably sick.

5. Swelling on the abdomen or on any other part of the body should also be checked out immediately to make sure the animal is in perfect health or not.

6. The eyes should be clean and should not have any discharge or weird looks to it.

7. If the reptile has any respiratory disease or problem, you will remark that its eyes will be swollen. In this case there will be mucus formation around the eye area.

8. The condition of the nose.

9. The overall sanitary conditions should also be checked to make sure if there are any health issues involved.

10. Check out the surrounding and if it is unclean this is a sign of the reptile having a probable disease.

11. Ask for handling the pet. This test should be done to see the strength of the lizard.

12. The limbs of the pet should be firm and strong.

Things You Should Know Before Adopting a Pet

Owning a pet is the dream of most people and the process of acquiring one can be long. Most breeders are expensive and have hectic procedures. Other ways you can use to acquire a pet without going through the breeders include adopting a pet. There are pet centers that take in animals that are orphaned, mistreated, or left behind by owners who have relocated to other parts. They are taken in and cared for until they are old and fit enough to be adopted by willing individuals. You must put in mind before adopting a pet several things. You should always make sure that you have made adequate inquiries so that by the time you are taking in the pet, you have made the right preparations.

Before adopting a pet, you should always find out how the pet ended up in the adoption center, since some owners take their pets to such places when they learn that the pets are extremely aggressive or poor breeds than they hoped for. Others are taken there due to being unfertile or due to deformities.

Before adopting a pet, find out its age and if it is too young, then you should think twice as it may not survive in your home. If you are adopting a puppy for example, find out how old he is, whether they are immunized against rabies, and d-wormed. You should also know the breed, and the qualities before adopting a pet and this is important for almost all pets
