Should You Let Your Cat Have One Litter Before Being Spayed?

A common myth about female cats (and dogs) is that having just one litter before being spayed makes them a better pet. Supposedly, it teaches them about compassion, responsibility, or whatever the person thinks is associated with having "children."

That's a very sad and incorrect belief, because first of all, we have a problem with overpopulation to begin with. There is absolutely no reason whatsoever to breed a cat that doesn't have a pedigree! If you're a reputable breeder and you go to cat shows and you're into breeding and showing, that's a different ballgame.

CAT BREEDERS

Reputable breeders don't let their cats reproduce just for the fun of it, or simply to raise some money for something special, such as Christmas shopping or a vacation. They don't bring more cats into the world just for the money. They also do not breed them until they already have promised homes lined up. Many don't breed them until this future is assured, often in writing. They then follow up to be sure it goes as planned, and if it doesn't, reputable breeders take them back.

If you can alter a cat before puberty, it also eliminates or greatly reduces their chances of developing certain reproductive types of cancer, such as uterine or breast cancer. Cats are very susceptible to breast cancer, actually. And if you get them spayed before they reach puberty, then those hormones never develop that would activate that reaction in the body.

An often associated opinion is that letting the cat have kittens is a good way to teach the kids about the "miracle of birth." Those people should buy a video of this 'miracle' and stop adding to the overpopulation problem. If they enjoy watching so much, the video will provide them with hours and hours of repeat performances without harming anyone.

But the idea that letting a cat be a mother in order to make her a better pet is hogwash! Treating cats with respect and kindness is the way to make them better pets. Not breeding them.
