Getting a second cat can be exciting for you, but a nightmare for your first cat. No matter what you do, there will be some fighting. But to help both cats adjust quicker there are several things that you can do.
First of all, remember that it will take much more than just one week for your new cat to adjust, sometimes months. Sometimes they will act up and urinate on shoes and rugs because they feel threatened. This will pass, if you have patience and try to create a buffer zone.

Second, try to keep the new cat sequestered in another room for the first week, allowing both cats to sniff each other under the door. This way, the cats know of each other, and are gradually introduced to each other. Third, try to make the new cat of the same sex and much younger. Bringing in another adult cat, especially of the opposite sex can make it very hard for them to ever get along.
Your original cat will feel much less threatened by the new cat, if they are smaller and weaker. Fourth, try to show them an equal amount of attention. Don't cuddle with one cat and not the other. Try to pet one with each hand at the same time.
If you keep these tips in mind, the introduction will go smoother. But remember, whenever you are getting a second cat, expect them to fight a little bit at the beginning until they establish their pecking order.
